Lookupper for Windows changelog
Updated October 9, 2026
What changed in Lookupper for Windows, newest first.
2.0.6
- The “Fill in the card with AI” button now shows only on incomplete cards.
- If an audio file has gone missing, filling in the card downloads it again.
- Fixed a rare bug where the overlay did not appear when the hotkey was pressed.
2.0.5
- Exporting to an Anki file is now free. One-click sync stays in Pro.
- The word list export is replaced by a CSV table with every card field, the screenshots and the audio.
- 19 more translation languages, among them Kazakh, Belarusian, Georgian and Armenian.
- Ukrainian text is now recognized.
- Anki export has a new “One sentence” option: the context and its translation are cut down to a single sentence.
- Sync with Anki can now sync deleted words too.
- The “Crop for phone” export option crops better.
- Word audio now takes the transcription and the article into account.
- If a game runs in exclusive fullscreen, Lookupper asks you to switch it to borderless window.
- The screen translator tells you when there is nothing to translate.
- Fixed text recognition crashes on NVIDIA graphics cards.
- Fixed the overlay showing a white background instead of being transparent.
- Sync with Anki no longer wipes your tags or sends cards you have already reviewed again. Words with diacritics can now be found by search.
- Dictionaries that fail to open are now marked with an error. Lookupper used to skip them silently.
- Fixed clicking the tray icon sometimes not opening the window or the menu.
2.0.4
- Yomitan dictionaries are now supported.
- Dictionary import now also accepts JMdict, KANJIDIC2, CC-CEDICT, Kaikki, WordNet, Webster and GCIDE.
- A word hyphenated across two lines is now recognized as one word: both halves are highlighted, selected and looked up together, and they go into the context and the paragraph without the hyphen.
- The context is back on the front of Anki cards by default. To apply it, press “Reset templates” in the Anki sync settings.
- When a translation fails, an error is now shown. Before, the blocks were simply left empty.
- Fixed settings, the dictionary list and game profiles being lost when an antivirus was scanning the app’s files at the moment of saving.
- Importing a damaged or unrecognized archive now shows a clear explanation.
- Fixed the flags for Slovenian and Mexican Spanish.
2.0.3
- Lookupper works much better with comics and manga.
- Lookupper is better at joining lines that belong together.
- The app no longer crashes on launch if its data folder has gone missing.
- The dictionary list and game settings are no longer reset after the computer shuts down unexpectedly.
- If the graphics driver fails, Lookupper keeps running on the CPU until it restarts or the session is renewed. It used to just crash.
- On some recent Windows 11 builds the tray icon could fail to open its menu. Fixed.
- The order of the fields in Looktionary changed slightly.
- Fixed the computer freezing on the first cold lookup.
2.0.2
- On Windows builds with Edge stripped out, Lookupper now offers to install WebView2. Offline dictionary articles used to simply not open there.
- Fixed importing dictionaries from multi-volume archives: it did not work at all.
- The screen translator no longer translates text that is already in the target language, as long as it is recognized correctly.
- OCR is 2–3 times faster on computers without a discrete graphics card, such as older laptops.
- The TranslateGemma download now tells you when there is not enough disk space.
- Fixed a .sentry-native folder being created on the desktop and in System32.
- Fixed OCR switching to the CPU for the rest of the session after the GPU was briefly lost.
- Fixed every following TranslateGemma translation failing after a driver reset.
- Sync with Anki now survives Anki dropping the connection.
- The saved words list, the dictionary card and the settings follow Fluent UI more closely.
- The position of the divider in saved words is remembered again.
2.0.1
- Translation with Google TranslateGemma is about 2–3 times faster.
- Fixed the translation not fully covering the original text.
- Added a saved words counter.
- In translator mode the translation can now be zoomed with the mouse wheel.
- Navigating with the gamepad’s D-pad is faster.
- Fixed the icon.
2.0.0

Screen translation with no internet and no limits
Lookupper now ships an offline translation engine — Google TranslateGemma 4B. The model downloads once and then runs on your own machine.
No internet needed, and your free cloud translation quota is untouched. Entirely.
Two builds: one for the CPU, one for the graphics card. Before downloading, Lookupper checks whether your machine can handle it and says so if it can’t.
-
The whole screen at once — no more clicking through paragraphs
The translator used to outline each paragraph and make you click them one by one. Now a single press translates the entire screen.
Cursor on nothing — the whole screen is translated. Cursor on a block — only that block.
And it costs less: a whole screen is one cloud translation. Before, every paragraph counted on its own.
-
Our own dictionary engine
Dictionaries are now read by Lookupper’s own engine.
Your own dictionaries import in the same four formats as before: StarDict, ABBYY Lingvo (.dsl and .dsl.dz), MDict (.mdx) and Aard 2 (.slob).
Seven formats the engine could never read have been added: JMdict and JMnedict, KANJIDIC2, CC-CEDICT, Wiktionary (Kaikki), GCIDE, Webster’s 1913 and WordNet (LMF). The catalog is built out of them — dictionaries like these simply do not exist in the usual formats.
A dictionary is no longer indexed to disk — it is ready as soon as it is unpacked.
One broken dictionary no longer hangs all the others, and a disabled one frees its memory while staying in the list.
Articles are styled the same way in every dictionary.
Add dictionary → Download free dictionaries opens the catalog: over 50 freely licensed dictionaries across 26 languages.
-
Japanese, Chinese and Korean — by word, not by character
These languages are written without spaces, so “the word under the cursor” has to be worked out first. Lookupper can do that now.
Each language downloads a language pack — a segmenter. It splits a line into real words rather than single characters. Ctrl breaks the selected word down character by character, for when you want one specific glyph.
The word card carries a reading guide: furigana for Japanese, pinyin for Chinese.
The catalog has dictionaries for them: JMdict, KANJIDIC2, JMnedict, Jitendex, CC-CEDICT and Wiktionary.
-
New card fields — article and gender among them
Article and gender were asked for most often. They are fields of their own now, not a line lost in the pile.
Gender comes from the word, not from the form on screen: context does not always reveal it, and in French it rarely does. So gender comes from the dictionary, and the lookup prints the word the way a dictionary would: “la babiole”.
“Key forms” — what has to be memorised alongside the headword and cannot be guessed from it: a German plural, a verb’s principal parts, a Slavic aspect pair, a Chinese or Japanese measure word.
“Components” — the breakdown into characters, radicals and morphemes with their meanings. The pop-up dictionary already showed this; the card used to throw it away.
“Explanation” — the plain-language breakdown, now kept on the card.
-
Sync straight into Anki (Pro)
The Sync with Anki button sends words into a running Anki through the AnkiConnect add-on — no file export, no manual import.
Cards arrive ready to study; there are no spare fields to strip out.
Syncing again updates the notes it already made instead of piling up duplicates: every word travels under its own permanent id.
Lookupper never deletes anything in Anki. A word removed from your library leaves its note tagged lookupper::removed — what happens to it is your call.
Reverse cards can now be switched on.
The .apkg export is still there, and a Quizlet set export joins it.
-
Full gamepad support
A gamepad button triggers a lookup, and words can be picked with the pad itself.
D-pad — pick a word, stick — scroll, A — confirm, B — close, X — save the word, Y — read it aloud.
Gamepads XInput cannot see are read too, Sony controllers included. The lookup button is bound by pressing it, exactly like a key.
-
Lookups are 40% faster
Recognition, screen capture and input handling were rewritten from the ground up. The difference shows most in games that load the CPU themselves.
New PP-OCRv6 recognition models and a reworked pipeline: word edges are snapped to the ink of the line, and paragraphs are grouped by a new algorithm.
Screen capture is faster through DirectX Desktop Duplication. An HDR desktop is read directly.
All global input — hotkeys, mouse buttons, gamepad — lives on one dedicated thread and restores itself if Windows drops the hook.
During a lookup Lookupper raises its own priority so the game cannot take the whole CPU.
The screen translator does not re-recognise a frame that has not changed — and does not spend quota on it.
-
Program profiles for every game and app
“No freeze”, “Freeze frame” or “Freeze” — set separately for each program.
Freeze frame stops the picture only: the game keeps running, keeps its sound, and still hears the gamepad. Freeze stops it outright — that is the cure for games that pin the cursor to the middle of the screen or advance dialogue faster than you read.
Program profiles add themselves after the first lookup.
A game protected by anti-cheat cannot be frozen. Lookupper will tell you.
Freezing a game that runs as administrator no longer means running all of Lookupper as administrator.
-
You can see how much free cloud usage is left
A usage ring appeared in the title bar, with the exact numbers in its tooltip.
Two counters: 50 pop-up dictionary lookups and 50 screen translations a day. It used to be one opaque limit that you learned about when it ran out.
Offline dictionaries and the offline translator are not counted — they are free forever, and the app says as much.
The size of the free limit has not changed. What changed is that you can see it.
-
The word editor is rebuilt Anki-style: collapsible fields in the same order they will have in Anki.
-
An “Explanation” field was added. It is generated separately by AI.
-
Highlighting inside the “Context” and “Context Translation” fields is now easy to change.
-
A card’s screenshot can be cropped inside Lookupper.
-
Screenshots are kept at their original size and cropped, if needed, only on export.
-
Search over saved words looks at more than the word itself: there is per-field search, such as app: or cefr:.
-
Words are selected by dragging across the list and deleted straight from it.
-
The free version still stores up to 1000 words — and now says so up front.
-
Ctrl+C copies the selection even when the overlay does not have focus.
-
A Japanese or Chinese word broken by a line wrap reads as the one word it is.
-
Flicker and artefacts when an article opens or is zoomed are gone.
-
A slider hint was added for font scaling.
-
A new first run: four steps.
-
Settings were rewritten from scratch: no jargon, each thing said once, the rare things moved under “Advanced”.
-
A disk usage widget was added: you can now see where the program spent your free space.
-
A key bought by following the link from the app activates itself — no more typing it in by hand.
-
The tray menu is simpler. The app mode can now be switched from the tray icon itself.
-
Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or newer is required
The app used to agree to install on Windows 10 1809 even though it could not run there. Now it asks for the version it needs.
-
Microsoft Store licenses are no longer read
Keys have not been sold through the Store for a year, and every subscription from there has run out. If you have a lifetime license bought in the Microsoft Store, write to creator@lookupper.com.
-
Three dictionary formats are no longer supported
Babylon (.bgl), ZIM (Kiwix) and EPWING are no longer read. For your own dictionaries StarDict, ABBYY Lingvo (.dsl), MDict (.mdx) and Aard 2 (.slob) remain; very old first-version .mdx files will not open either. If your dictionary has stopped answering, write in: support can be added.
-
Definition audio is gone
Lookupper now generates audio for words only.
-
A second note type version will appear in Anki
The new fields do not fit the old note type, and Anki will not let it grow. So words in Anki on the Lookupper Flash v1.1 note type stay as they are, and words on Lookupper Flash v2.0 sit beside them.
-
Windows OCR can no longer be chosen as the recognition engine
It is too dated and does not support the app’s newer features.
Release notes for versions before 2.0 are on the forum. That thread is no longer updated, but it is where release notes used to be published.
